Football predictions weekend commencing 29th March 2013

After the weekend internationals, focus is well and truly back on club football.  This also means a return of the Premier League action, which kicks off Saturday lunchtime at the Stadium of Light.  Manchester Utd are now too far ahead to not win another Premier League title and another win is predicted.  Arsenal and Manchester City both play at home with City looking to cement a top four finish and Arsenal tracking one down.  Arsenal play Reading who are second bottom and lost their last five league games whilst City entertain Newcastle Utd who are struggling to repeat last season's form.  Both are forecast home wins.  You never know what Chelsea side are going to turn out but a marginal away win is predicted against struggling Southampton.  Spurs' form hasn't been great of late and Swansea are always hard to beat, especially at the Liberty, but they're also predicted to keep up their top four challenge.  West Brom have had a decent season whilst West Ham have struggled somewhat, although should remain safe, so with West Brom being the away team this is another close affair but with West Brom predicted taking all three points.  Wigan have struggled in recent seasons and have managed to escape relegation so far but will this be the season they go down?  Sitting in the relegation zone it doesn't look good, however, a draw is forecast against Norwich.  The late match on Saturday sees Champions League chasing Everton face Stoke.  Everton's form has been mixed of late and think they really lack that top striker to push them to the next level and a marginal home win is predicted.

Turning to the Sunday game, Aston Villa has shown some resurgence of late but face a decent looking Liverpool side.  However, it'll be in the back of Liverpool players' mind that they got beaten at home against Villa so should be an interesting match.  Last game of the weekend is on Monday which sees struggling QPR try to continue their great escape, however, Fulham appear to be a little to strong and forecast a marginal home win.

1 comment:

  1. So, let's look at the Premier League weekend to date. The first match of the weekend was at struggling Sunderland, as they faced 'to be' champions, Manchester Utd. The United win, as predicted, forced the Sunderland board to sack Martin O'Neil. Was this decision justified? You tell us Sunderland fans. Apparently, Paulo di Canio is currently in talks. Would be an interesting appointment. Reading are as good as gone, and it didn't get any better after the demolition by Arsenal, which keeps them in the mix for the top four hunt. Manchester City conceded their title a few weeks back. Their win today against Newcastle was expected, but what it does do is put them 9 points clear of Arsenal. There was a small doubt whether they may get caught up in the battle for champions league places, but that win I think will seal it. 3/3 so far.

Next up is Chelsea. The predictor forecasted an away win against Southampton, but Chelsea's mixed form has bitten them on the backside again. They lost 2-1 and it was fully deserved. That puts Southampton up to 12th place and one more win should see them safe. As for Chelsea, they're firmly in a three horse race for two places. Spurs' form have dropped in recent weeks and Swansea is always a tough place to go. However, another top performance by Gareth Bale saw them take all three points and leapfrog them into third place above Chelsea. West Brom were predicted to continue their great season and beat West Ham at Upton Park, however, the Hammers turned it on winning 3-1. That's 4/6.

Wigan are a funny old team. Every season they manage to scrape their way out of the relegation zone - are they going to manage to do it again? Their win against Norwich, which was predicted a draw, has put them up into 17th and shoved Villa back into the drop zone. With QPR and Reading most probably already down, the last relegation place is between Sunderland, Aston Villa and Wigan, I reckon. Who'll come out on top? The last game on Saturday was at Goodison Park. Everton are hanging on to the coattails of Arsenal and are the dark horse for the champions league place. I think they've probably got a bit too much to do but a good win a Stoke was important. Villa was looking to repeat the result the last time these too teams met, and for a while it was looking like it might happen as they took the lead. When Villa play well, they do look good but seem to be lacking the experience to see games through. Liverpool went on to win 2-1 which pushes Aston Villa down into the drop zone.

Who's going to win the battle for champions league places and who's going to win the relegation dog fight? Have your say here...!
