Football Predictions weekend commencing 17th May 2013

We've reached the final Premier League weekend of the season and there's still one thing left to decide - the last Champions League place…!  Both Spurs and Arsenal won their respective matches last weekend, which means it all hinges on Sunday's games.  On paper, Arsenal have the more difficult tie - away to Newcastle, however, it is in their hands.  A win at St James' Park and they'll guarantee themselves a top four finish.  Meanwhile, Spurs are at home to Sunderland, who have already guaranteed Premier League football for next season.  Both teams are predicted reasonably comfortable wins so if it goes to form Spurs look like they'll miss out again.  However, will Arsenal have the nerve to keep their bottle…?  Have your say…! 

Chelsea could mathematically still finish 5th but that will require a 17 goal swing compared to Spurs' goal difference.  They do have a tough match at home to Everton, and Moyes will want to go out on a high.  With Chelsea playing they millionth match of the season it might be quite tight, however, they would not want to finish fourth and have to start the Champions League campaign early in the qualification round - marginal home win predicted.  A quick word for Alex Ferguson who manages his last game for Manchester United - love him or loathe, you've got to admire what he's achieved in his career and he's forecast to bow out with a win.

    Woah, what a finale we had...! 36 goals on the final Premier Leagues day of the season, including a ten goal thriller!

    So let's go straight the main two games - Newcastle - Arsenal and Tottenham - Sunderland. Arsenal were in the driving seat but had the slightly tougher fixture, especially being away from home. Newcastle looked good in the first half and Arsenal were unsure at the back, however, Newcastle couldn't capitalise on their early chances. Arsenal took the lead in the second half and hung on for the victory, sealing their 4th spot. Meanwhile, Spurs left it late again and another Gareth Bale goal made sure Arsenal had to keep their concentration in the dying minutes. That's two correct out of two.

    Chelsea rounded off a good season with a win at Everton, sealing 3rd place, whilst Norwich pulled off a shock at Manchester City with a 3-2 win. Liverpool rounded the season off with a win at bottom of the league, QPR - Jamie Carragher, playing his last game. Two teams that have struggled a little bit this season, Southampton and Stoke played out a 1-1 draw. That's five correct out of six.

    As mentioned in a previous post, Swansea appear to have been on the beach since winning the league cup. Well, nothing has changed as Fulham put three past Swansea. Ferguson's last game in charge of United looked like he was going to go out with a win, however, resurgent WBA pulled back to score five goals in the ten goal thriller, as the match ended in a draw. West Ham put four past Reading to round off a poor season for the Royals and Wigan and Villa share the points at the DW Stadium.

    To summarise, we've achieved a total of six out of ten for the final Premier League weekend of the season.

    However, it doesn't stop there - football goes on throughout the summer with MLS, Japan J League, northern European Leagues and South America. There's also the matter of the Champions League final and the Championship Play off to decide. If there's any specific leagues you want me to cover, then please mail me and let me know.
