The Premier League weekend kicks off with 3rd place Chelsea playing away to Aston Villa. Villa's recent form has lifted them away from the relegation zone, and with two games left, although they're not mathematically safe, they will stay up. However, Chelsea, who have played over 60 games this season are still on top form and are predicted an away win. Spurs are currently laying in 5th place waiting for either Chelesea or Arsenal to slip up, and they can keep up the pressure with an away win at Stoke, who are also safe. Norwich were looking good for a mid table finish a couple of months back but, with only one win in nine (against Reading) they've found themselves in a relegation fight. They're at home to West Brom who have had a decent season and looking good to finish in the top half. An away win is predicted but who will be more hungry for the three points? Newcastle are another team that have been dragged into a relegation battle, as they lie only three points above 18th placed Wigan. However, they do face already relegated QPR, who did show they can play in their defeat to Arsenal last weekend. A draw is predicted but will that be enough?
Sunderland and Southampton is the real six-pointer of the weekend. Southampton have lost their last two games after putting a good run together and they lie four points off the drop zone. However, with four other teams below them fighting for their lives it'll be difficult to see them going down and a draw is predicted. Manchester United and Swansea are two teams who are theoretically already 'at the beach'. United summed up the title a few weeks back whilst Alex Fergusson announced he was stepping down as manager. Swansea have been on the beach since they won the league cup but their Premier League status is safe for another season. To be honest, whatever team United put out it still should be enough to get the predicted win. Arsenal at home to Wigan is probably the match that has the most riding on it. Arsenal cannot afford to slip up as they're currently lying in that last champions league place, whilst a loss for Wigan would virtually put them down - one to watch out for!
The top predictions of the weekend that are most likely to come in are as follows...
Champions League finalist, Bayern Munich, who are home to Augsburg. Bayern have been unstoppable this season and are favourites to win the Champions League this season. Napoli are currently lying second in the league and face second to bottom Siena and looks like an easy win. In the Spanish second tier, Girona are also second in the league but they're playing bottom of league, Xerez - Girona are still fighting for the automatic promotion spot. I've added the Swedish league which is still in early stages but Malmo are looking for an away win.

Let's have a look at how the predictions have gone so far this weekend. On Saturday, Chelsea got a late goal to beat Wigan 2-1 which confirmed their Champions League place for next season. Stoke against Spurs was the early game on Sunday. Three points were vital for Spurs if they wanted to stay in the hunt for top four and another late goal by Spurs got all three points. That's two out of two so far.
ReplyDeleteThere were five 3 o'clock games on Sunday and wins for Everton and Liverpool made that four correct predictions out of four. However, West Brom were forecast an away victory against Norwich but Norwich seemed the more hungry and confirm their Premier League status for next season with a 4-0 victory.
QPR and Newcastle were predicted to share the spoils as neither team haven't been playing well. Newcastle claimed all three points just to pour more misery onto relegated QPR. One draw that was a correct prediction was the game against Sunderland and Southampton. Sunderland were in greater need of the points but it all depends on the games on Tuesday. Lastly, we turn to Old Trafford as Alex Fergusson manages his last game for Manchester United at the fortress. Swansea, as mentioned in my opening post, have been on the beach since winning the league cup as United claim all three points.
So to summarise that's six correct out of eight in the Premier League.
The last two games of the match week were played on Tuesday night - Arsenal were at home to Wigan whilst Manchester City were away to Reading. There were no surprises as Arsenal confirmed Wigan's relegation to the Championship and has kept them in the driving seat for a top four finish. A win at the weekend will do the job.

So a very good weekend for predictions as that's a total of 8 out of 10.
