Football Predictions weekend commencing 2nd August 2013

Well, we're back...!  It's been a couple of weeks since I posted some predictions, mainly because I've been working in the background preparing for the new season.  The wait is over (or nearly over if you're waiting on the Premier League) as the football league starts this weekend...!  It always seems like a long wait for the new season to start, especially if there's no summer tournament, however, it has seemed to have flown by.

So how do you think the teams that have been relegated from the Premier League will fair?  Will Harry Redknapp guide QPR back to the Premier League on the first attempt, has he got the right players?  They face Sheffield Wednesday in their opening game.  Wigan are predicted to open the campaign with a marginal win over Barnsley whilst Reading are forecast a draw at home to Ipswich Town.

It's also first games for the Scottish Premier League and Celtic are predicted to get underway with a winning start.  As usual, I've also included the Japan, Korea, Brazil and northern European leagues which are now well underway.

    So, the first matches have been played in the English football season and it's always difficult to predict scores at this early stage, particularly the Championship where anyone can beat anyone. Very competitive league.

    However, I don't think we got off to a bad start with 5 out of 11 for Saturday's game. All relegated sides from the Premier League got off to a winning start and I'd imagine would be strong candidates to be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. One prediction that I'd like to pick out is the away win for newly promoted Yeovil, who picked up three points at the New Den with a late goal from Ed Upson. Although this is their first outing in the 2nd tier of English football, I think they look a strong outfit and may upset a few of the bigger boys in the division. Watford were the 'nearly' men from last season, losing out in extra time in the play-off final against Crystal Palace. However, under the leadership of Zola, they will also be a team looking to push for the play-offs, if not higher, again this season. They had a tough start against Birmingham who had quite a mixed campaign last season but an early goal by Troy Deeney saw all three points go to Watford. Deeney is maybe one to watch out for this season and could be inline for another hatful of goals.
